Our History

Lucas CRC has met regularly for worship for over 120 years. In 1883, when the church was organized, the members met in homes. Due to rapid growth, in 1884 the church constructed two log meeting houses on Lucas Road. These were spaced four miles apart because of traveling difficulties for the widely scattered congregation. In 1888, the church called its first ordained minister.

In 1896, the frame church building in the present location was built. It was constructed and furnished largely from local lumber donated by members. Even the elaborately carved pulpit was made from local materials. Throughout succeeding years the building has been enlarged, added on to and updated as the need arose.

First Lucas CRC church

This large, white church on the hill on Lucas Road has become a community landmark, often being referred as "the beacon on the hill" by its members. It serves as a silent call to worship for all those that see it and for those who hold it dear. But this edifice, though it holds a special place in the hearts of its members, is not really the church at Lucas. The church at Lucas is the people of its congregation. It is the body of believers who meet in this building for worship that Jesus refers to in the New Testament as the Church.

Lucas CRC Church BuildingWhen the apostles wrote their letters of encouragement and instruction to new believers, they greeted them as "the Church at Rome", "the Church at Corinth" and so on. They met in the catacombs of Rome, in homes, in groves by a riverside, or any other place where they would not be disturbed. And today, whether the Church of Jesus Christ meets in great some cathedrals, in crowded huts in third world countries, or in a frame country church such as Lucas, it continues to be reminded from scriptures, "Let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds. Let us not give up meeting together..., but let us encourage one another and all the more as you see the Day approaching." (Hebrews 10:24-25)
